Project Overview
Smith’s Excavation & Total Services was selected to support a utility infrastructure upgrade in a heavily wooded region of Western Pennsylvania. The goal was to install new underground conduit and water lines beneath sensitive terrain with minimal surface disturbance—making horizontal directional drilling (HDD) the method of choice.
This turnkey project included access preparation, bore path layout, drilling execution, conduit pulling, and final restoration over a 1,000-foot installation path.
Scope of Work
- Bore path planning and coordination with utility locators
- Construction of entry and exit pits with excavation support
- Drilling and pullback of dual 6” HDPE conduit runs across varied terrain
- Mid-line tie-in trenching and stub-up installation
- Restoration of disturbed areas, including matting and hydroseeding
Challenges & Solutions
The bore path crossed under a narrow stream and had to navigate shallow bedrock and unpredictable clay layers. Our team used real-time bore tracking and angle adjustments to stay on path and avoid costly delays. We also installed erosion control measures to ensure full DEP compliance throughout the project area.
Outcome
The directional boring was completed with no surface disruptions, on time, and under budget. The client reported improved efficiency and reduced restoration cost compared to traditional trenching, and has since engaged Smith’s for multiple HDD projects in the region.
