Project Overview

Smith’s Excavation & Total Services was contracted to stabilize a high-risk erosion area in Northern Pennsylvania where steep terrain, water runoff, and legacy utility infrastructure posed ongoing environmental challenges. The project involved both proactive erosion prevention and post-disturbance remediation across a 7-acre site footprint.

Scope of Work

Our team was tasked with developing and executing a comprehensive erosion control strategy that met DEP and client-specific requirements. Key services included:

• Clearing and grubbing of overgrown brush and decayed timber across slope banks
• Installation of over 1,500 linear feet of silt fencing and coir wattles along primary runoff channels
• Fine grading and subgrade stabilization to shape water movement
• Hydroseeding and straw blanket application for rapid revegetation
• Construction of two stabilized construction entrances to prevent sediment tracking
• Ongoing stormwater BMP (Best Management Practices) monitoring throughout the project

Challenges & Solutions

Due to recent heavy rainfall, soil conditions were highly saturated and unstable at mobilization. We deployed specialized low-ground-pressure equipment and adjusted our sequencing to prioritize drainage improvement before full access was possible. We also coordinated with environmental inspectors to fast-track permit amendments for minor plan revisions mid-project.

Outcome

The project was completed on schedule with zero safety incidents, full regulatory compliance, and a successfully stabilized landscape. Our erosion control measures exceeded retention thresholds, and vegetation regrowth was observed within two weeks of hydroseeding. The client has since engaged us for additional restoration projects in the region.
