Project Overview

Smith’s Excavation & Total Services was contracted to replace a deteriorating culvert crossing in a rural section of Jefferson County. The existing steel pipe had collapsed, leading to flooding, erosion, and safety concerns for both residents and utility access vehicles. The municipality sought a durable, low-maintenance replacement that could be completed quickly with minimal road closure time.

We recommended and installed a precast concrete box culvert, sized to handle increased water flow, with reinforced headwalls and riprap-lined approaches.

Scope of Work

• Demolition and safe removal of the failed culvert pipe
• Excavation and preparation of foundation for box culvert installation
• Placement of precast box culvert sections
• Installation of stone backfill and riprap for erosion control
• Roadway reconstruction and surface grading
• Final inspection and restoration of adjacent landscape

Challenges & Solutions

The site’s limited access and high groundwater levels presented initial challenges. We implemented trench dewatering and coordinated with local traffic authorities to stage equipment and materials efficiently. Our team worked around the clock during installation to minimize road disruption.

Outcome

The project was completed ahead of schedule and fully passed municipal inspection. Water flow through the new culvert significantly improved, and roadway stability was restored. Residents and municipal officials praised the clean, professional restoration and minimal traffic interruption. The successful completion of this project led to a follow-up contract for additional drainage improvements in the area.
